Golf Tips from the Pros
Please come & join us for our Grand Opening of the NEW Burnaby Mountain Driving Range today - Saturday, June 12th! We will be offering demonstrations, providing golf tips, and providing opportunity to test your skills. Meet our CPGA Professionals and come celebrate this special event with us!
Check your Balance!
A well balanced swing can go a long way towards better golf shots. Next time you are on the Driving Range check your balance by holding your follow through for a full 3 seconds. If you have problems holding your finish, spend some time on improving your balance or contact one of our CPGA golf pros for a lesson.

Extension through shot
Put two tees in the ground about 12 to 14 inches apart. Place a ball on the forward tee and address the rear one as you would normally. Swing back and through, focusing on the tee where your ball should be. But try to create enough extension in your arms that you make contact with the forward ball. It's not that important to hit good shots- just try to make solid contact. If you top the ball or come inside it, then you are not turning enough through the shot. To be able to hit the ball properly, you must release your right side freely through the shot. So focus on that until you can consistently make contact.

Always pick a club that you can swing comfortably for each distance.
Selecting the proper club for a shot can make the difference between a par, bogey, double bogey or an X on the scorecard! The important factor is to pick a club that you will be confident and comfortable with in your hands and is also an appropriate club for the shot at hand. Factors such as wind, slope, green elevation, a good or bad lie, are important factors to consider when choosing the right club. Always consider where you want to be hitting your next shot from especially if you were to miss-hit your shot.
Examples:
- If there are more hazards in front of the green, use an extra club and use less club if there are hazards behind the green.
- If you have a bad lie, don't be a hero. Use a club that has enough loft to get the ball out of the bad lie and back in play (take your medicine).
- If the green is elevated use more club, and use less club if your hitting down a down slope.
- Swing easy when it's breezy
- If you can't reach the green with your shot, pick a club that will leave the next shot with a comfortable distance to approach the green.
- Learn how far you hit each of your clubs by going to the driving range and practicing. Always have a pre-shot routine. Be realistic with your expectations and you will be on your way to lowering your scores!

Get Centered
Few things are more important to consistent shot-making than good balance and posture.
To center your balance try this: Get in your address position, close your eyes and imagine you are about to spring straight up. Doing so would require your balance to be centered - and not favoring your right or left foot or your toes or heels. Use this centered and balanced feeling as the base for your golf swing and your ball striking should become more consistent and predictable.
